Purpose, volunteering, a role in the community

A strong sense of purpose (ikigai) tracks with 2.4× lower mortality in cohorts; the most important protective factor after retirement. Volunteering above 2 hours a week measurably reduces depression and mortality.

First step today

Today: write in one sentence why you get up in the morning. If you can't, find a local organisation where you can help 2 hours a month.

How

It needn't be a “grand” purpose: grandchildren, a garden, a choir, mentoring, a club, caregiving. The question: who would miss me tomorrow, and why do I get up? Plan the replacement role 2 years before retirement. Volunteering: 1–2 hours a week, regular, in person (not just donating money).

Evidence

Alimujiang 2019 (Health and Retirement Study, n=6,985, 50+): the lowest purpose scores meant 2.4× the mortality of the highest, adjusted; strongest for cardiovascular death. Boyle 2010 (n=951): high purpose –52% Alzheimer's risk over 7 years. Meta-analysis (Okun 2013, n=143,000+): volunteering –24% mortality in older adults. The “role-less” first year after retirement is a mortality peak.
