Learning new skills, mental challenge
Not crosswords but NEW and HARD learning (a language, an instrument, photography) builds cognitive reserve: in one RCT, 3 months of new skill learning at 65+ lifted memory to the level of people 30 years younger.

First step today
Today: pick a skill you always wanted, and block 3 fixed hours a week for it in your calendar — the first one this week.
How
Pick something that frustrates you as a beginner: a language (app plus conversation partner), an instrument, dancing (movement plus memory plus company), chess, coding, crafts. 5+ hours a week, for months. Brain-training apps improve their own task and don't transfer. The social plus physical plus learning combination (e.g. dance) is strongest.
Evidence
Park 2014 (Synapse trial, RCT, n=221, ages 60–90): 15 hours a week of learning photography or quilting for 3 months improved episodic memory; the passive group (films, puzzles, socialising) didn't. Leanos 2023: learning 3 skills at once for 3 months gave a +20-year “cognitive rejuvenation” lasting a year. Verghese 2003 (n=469, 21 years): dancers had –76% dementia risk. ACTIVE trial: processing-speed training –29% dementia after 10 years — memory training didn't.
