Albumin

Optimal

> 42 g/l; below 38 a warning, below 35 abnormal

Why

The main plasma protein made by the liver; a fall signals inflammation, malnutrition or liver/kidney disease. One of the strongest components of Levine's phenotypic age: every –1 g/l ≈ +5% mortality in older adults. Simple, cheap, measurable anywhere.

How often

Yearly, as part of the liver panel.

What moves it

Adequate protein (1.2–1.6 g/kg), treating the source of inflammation, less alcohol; it's not egg white that “raises” it but removing the cause.
