White cells + neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio

Optimal

WBC 3.5–6.0 G/l; NLR 1–2

Why

Free with the routine blood count: even within the reference range, a HIGHER white count (>7) signals chronic low-grade inflammation and scales with mortality. NLR (neutrophils ÷ lymphocytes) above 3 predicts cardiovascular and cancer risk independently of CRP.

How often

Yearly, as part of the blood count. Wait 4 weeks after an infection.

What moves it

Quitting smoking (largest effect, –1 G/l), weight loss, sleep, exercise, omega-3, treating gum disease, treating sleep apnoea.
