Sunlight in moderation, skin protection

Sun-avoiding women had double the mortality in a 20-year Swedish cohort — yet sunburn causes melanoma, and sunscreen halved it in an RCT. 10–20 minutes a day without burning, plus protection for longer exposure.

First step today

Today: 15 minutes outside at lunch with sleeves rolled up; and put an SPF 30 face cream on the bathroom shelf for the morning routine.

How

April–October: 10–20 minutes of midday sun on bare arms and legs without burning (less for fair skin, more for dark). Beyond that: SPF 30+ on face, neck and hands (80% of photoageing is UV), a hat, shade between 11 and 3. From November to March the sun makes no vitamin D in central Europe — supplement then. Sunbeds: never (melanoma +20% per session when young). Yearly skin check with many moles.

Evidence

Lindqvist 2016 (MISS cohort, n=29,518 women, 20 years): sun-avoiders had 2× the mortality of the most sun-exposed, comparable to smoking; not just vitamin D — skin NO production lowers blood pressure (Liu 2014, RCT: UVA –5 mmHg). Green 2011 (Nambour RCT, n=1,621, 10 years): daily sunscreen –50% melanoma. Hughes 2013: daily sunscreen meant 24% less skin ageing over 4.5 years.
