With Hashimoto's or hyperthyroidism ask a doctor; kelp extracts can deliver milligrams of iodine — avoid.

What it is

Need is 150 µg/day, 220–250 in pregnancy. Main sources: sea fish, dairy, iodised salt, seaweed (the last can be too much).

What the evidence shows

WHO/IGN: 30–40% of European adults fall short; over 80% of vegans. Deficiency raises TSH and fatigue; in pregnancy it affects the child's IQ.
