Omega-3 (EPA/DHA)

halolaj · fish oil · Fischöl · algaolaj

A stand-in for two weekly servings of oily fish; high-dose EPA lowered cardiovascular risk.

4/5Estimated monthly cost: ≈ 12
Dose

1–2 g EPA+DHA daily (that's the fatty-acid content, not capsule weight). Algal oil for vegans.

Timing

With food; frozen capsules cause less reflux.

Cautions

May prolong bleeding time with anticoagulants; high doses slightly raised atrial-fibrillation risk. Oxidised (rancid) product is worse than none.

What it is

Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids: membrane components and precursors of pro-resolving mediators.

What the evidence shows

In REDUCE-IT, 4 g/day purified EPA cut major cardiovascular events by 25% in statin-treated patients. One-gram mixed fish oil (VITAL, ASCEND) showed no clear overall effect, but did in people who rarely eat fish. An omega-3 index ≥8% tracks with lower mortality in cohorts.
