Multidimensional iron dysmetabolism and gut-brain axis interactions in restless legs syndrome: from peripheral deficiency to central dysregulation

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a sensorimotor neurological disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to move the lower limbs. Although traditional paradigms attribute its pathogenesis to peripheral iron deficiency, many clinically diagnosed patients present with normal peripheral iron indicators yet exhibit central iron homeostatic dysregulation. This discrepancy highlights a distinct decoupling between peripheral iron stores and central iron availability. The RLS-associated iron metabolic impairment is inherently a complex pathological network orchestrated by multidimensional processes, including intestinal absorption, systemic distribution, blood-brain barrier (BBB) transport, and intracellular utilization. Crucially, gut dysbiosis-induced low-grade enterogenous inflammation may activate the IL-6/hepcidin pathway, thereby sequestering systemically available iron; this mechanism r

Your sleep may be hiding an early clue to Alzheimer’s

Frequent micro-awakenings during sleep were linked to higher genetic risk for Alzheimer’s in healthy middle-aged adults who had no symptoms. The discovery raises the possibility that subtle changes during sleep could offer an early warning signal years before memory problems appear.

Too much or too little sleep may make your body age faster

Both too little and too much sleep may be linked to faster aging throughout the body. Researchers analyzing 23 biological aging clocks found the lowest aging levels among people sleeping about 6.4 to 7.8 hours per day. Short or long sleep was also associated with numerous conditions affecting the brain, heart, lungs, metabolism, and digestive system.

This common vitamin was linked to 13% better cognitive scores

Older adults with mild cognitive impairment and sleep problems who took at least 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily scored more than 13% higher on a cognitive test than those taking none. The preliminary findings suggest vitamin D could be worth studying as a potentially modifiable factor during an early window of cognitive decline.

AI can tell if your brain is aging faster than you are

A person’s sleeping brain may reveal warning signs of dementia long before memory problems begin. Researchers used machine learning to analyze EEG recordings from about 7,000 adults and found that an older-than-expected “brain age” was tied to a sharply higher dementia risk. Every additional 10 years of brain aging raised that risk by nearly 40%.

Alzheimer’s breakthrough: Scientists restore two hours of sleep without clearing brain plaques

Researchers have uncovered a surprising culprit behind sleep loss in Alzheimer’s disease: the brain’s own immune cells. In mice with amyloid plaques, overactive microglia triggered inflammation that kept the brain from getting enough deep, restorative sleep. Temporarily removing most of these cells restored more than two hours of sleep per day, even though the plaques remained unchanged.
